Providence is Shiru Cafe's first US location. As noted on their website, the international chain has opened on the Brown University campus ahead of Amherst College, Harvard University, Princeton University, and Yale University, which will follow. Shiru is known for its unconventional business model, which provides free drinks, Wi-FI, electrical outlets, and study spaces to students (faculty and staff are required to pay $1 for most items) that are paid for by sponsor companies whose promotions appear on cups, smart devices of customers, and the cafe's digital signage.

The new location is on 165 Angell Street, near Brown's CareerLAB.
